Our garden policy
At Barley Community Garden, we are committed to creating a sustainable and thriving community space that promotes positive gardening techniques.
Environmental
-
Organic: We use organic gardening methods, avoiding synthetic pesticides and fertilisers to protect soil health, local wildlife, and the broader ecosystem.
-
Water Conservation: We aim to minimise water usage and promote efficient water management by mulching, planting trees for shade and using drought tolerant plants where possible.
-
Soil Health: We enhance soil fertility through organic composting, crop rotation, and cover cropping, ensuring the long-term productivity and sustainability of our garden beds.
-
Biodiversity: Our garden supports biodiversity by growing a wide variety of plants, including native species and pollinator-friendly flowers, to create a balanced and resilient ecosystem.
Social
-
Community engagement: We provide a welcoming space for all community members to participate in gardening activities, fostering a sense of belonging and community spirit.
-
Inclusive participation: We strive to make our garden accessible to everyone, regardless of age, ability, or socioeconomic status, through inclusive design and programs.
-
Local partnerships: We collaborate with local schools, care homes and GP practice to support community-based initiatives.
Economic
-
Affordable access: We ensure that access to the garden is free for all.
-
Resource sharing: We promote the sharing of tools, seeds, and knowledge among members to reduce costs and foster a collaborative environment.
-
Sustainable funding: We seek diverse funding sources, including grants, donations, and community events, to maintain the financial stability of our garden and support our initiatives.
We are dedicated to growing a greener future for our community and the local environment.
