As we start our community gardening adventure, this is a question many people may be asking!
A community garden is a piece of land collectively gardened by a group of people, fostering a sense of community and sustainability. Gardening together in this way can have many benefits:
Provide opportunities for neighbours to interact.
Encourage physical activity which can improve overall health.
Exposure to nature, interacting with others and the sense of accomplishment from gardening tasks can improve mental health and wellbeing.
Provide opportunities for learning about gardening for people of all ages.
Promote biodiversity by providing habitats for pollinators and wildlife.
Enhance the aesthetics of a local area and foster community pride.
There is a growing body of research evidence to support what many people who garden can tell you - gardening makes us feel good! Since 2019, it has even been prescribed as part of the NHS social prescribing long term plan, complementing our ‘National Health Service’ with a ‘Natural Health Service’. Gardening as a community group adds another dimension to the many benefits gardening provides.
